Rev. Capt. William White. [92] |
This web site is a digital presentation of Captain William White's 1917 diary of his war service in France as the chaplain of No. 2 Construction Company. Unique in history, No. 2 Construction was Canada's only racially segregated military unit formed of Black soldiers. Capt. White was also the only Black commissioned officer in the World War I British Expeditionary Force. Capt. White's biography and life beyond World War I is well described elsewhere, as is the history of No. 2 Construction. The purpose of this exhibit is to make his diary more accessible to historians and other members of the general public interested in Canadian military history and Rev. White's inspirational story as a person. The physical diary itself is fragile and is not yet available in digital form from Library and Archives Canada. Here, the diary pages are presented as photographs and transcribed text. As a research aid, the people, organizations and locations in the diary have been indexed. Also, the locations are mapped.
